Looking for a Halloween Romance?

Available on Nook, Kindle and eBook:
Like Magic, an erotic-romance for Halloween - now only $1.99!

Ian Hannigan was having the worst day of his life. A real estate prospect turned out to be a prank, his car has been stolen, and he’s stranded in the worst neighborhood he can imagine on Halloween night. If he believed in magic, he would swear he’d been cursed. Nothing could possibly make this day any worse or better… That is, nothing but Raven, a mysterious occult shop owner who not only claims to be a witch, but insists that she summoned him as the answer to her aching loneliness. Ian’s night just got a lot weirder. And his love life just got a lot more interesting.

Snippet:

It was nearing midnight when Ian woke alone. Someone was lighting fire crackers in the alley below the window. He wondered, rather belatedly, whether the police had ever shown up and was surprised with himself for having dozed off in a strange bed on such a night. His car could be in the harbor by now, but oddly, he didn’t have the will to care. Stretching his overused back muscles, he figured the orgasms he enjoyed that night were nearly worth the loss.

He sat up in the unfamiliar bed noticing with a smile that Raven had covered him with the soft quilt before wandering off to wherever she was. It was a small gesture, but an unbelievably sweet one to a man who hadn’t been tucked in often enough as a boy. Had she kissed him on the forehead when she did it? He was willing to bet she had.

And a new, previously unreleased story for St Patrick's Day: Cormack's Luck, exclusive to this anthology!

Hiding away in the Irish countryside she’d always dreamed of, she communes with the fairies and beasts of her fantasy and folklore. When a local doctor comes down on her for filling his young son’s head with “nonsense”, Katie must show them both that not even St Patrick himself could drive all the dragons out of their imaginations. In the process, she might be able to reverse a wrong that has been hanging over the Cormacks for five generations, one that has brought them all together for the season of renewal.

#samplesunday: A Scene from Like Magic

An excerpt from my paranormal/contemporary erotic-romance for Halloween, Like Magic.

“This ritual will make sure that, if we are meant to be together, we’ll return to each other if we’re parted,” she whispered, the look on her face telling him she recognized their parting was inevitable.

He wasn’t sure how to respond, as they’d promised each other only that one night. Instead of speaking, he took her hand again and pressed a kiss to the tender skin of her wrist and then pulled her into his lap. He was there now and that would have to be enough. He sent whatever had brought him to her a silent word of thanks though it was inarticulate in his mind.

As if sensing his speechlessness, Raven merely smiled and looked at their entwined fingers. She turned his hand over in her own, as if noting the relative size and roughness of his palm in comparison with her own.

“Will I meet a tall, dark stranger?” he joked, looking into the lines in his hand.

“You have a long life,” she said. “Longer than you know – longer than before your birth, and after your life. You have an old soul.”

“The matron at one of my group homes used to say that,” he smiled. “But just because I was always a little bit tight-assed and not very happy as a child.”

“Why was that?”

Ian tilted his head in an effort to dismiss the stories of his youth, which weren’t incredibly pleasant, but also not very interesting. Before adulthood, his life had mostly consisted of boredom and waiting.

“My mother died when I was young. I never knew my father.” He shrugged. “Wasn’t a great deal to be happy about, really.”

“Now, though?” she said, looking back at the lines. “I think you’re satisfied in some ways, but not in others. You’re ambitious and you do well, but you’re occasionally unlucky especially with your love life. You’ve done a lot for yourself, though.”

Ian was increasingly uncomfortable with her inspection, feeling bare to her eyes.

“Enough about me,” he said lightly to cover up the quick way he yanked his hand from hers. “How about you?”

Raven smiled as if she knew why he stopped her, but was unruffled by his reluctance to tell her more. She produced her palm to him with a good natured chuckle.

“My life is an open book. Be my guest.”

“Oh no,” he said. “I don’t read palms.” She squealed as he grabbed her and started to plaster her neck and shoulders with kisses. “Ear lobes, maybe,” he said in a muffled voice as he took possession of her ear with his lips. “Ahh! You will indeed meet a tall, dark stranger,” he confirmed. “And you two will fuck like bunnies all... night... long...”

A bit of Like Magic for #samplesunday

A little of my contemporary/paranormal Halloween erotic-romance Like Magic.

~*~

“Damn, damn, damn!” Ian muttered. He balled his hand and raised it to the door. Again, he let his arm fall to his side without knocking. He’d walked the streets for fifteen minutes, and found nothing but several groups of people who didn’t look very helpful and a broken payphone outside a rundown convenience store. The rain was coming down even harder, and the gutters ran with muddy streams. He could no longer feel his toes, and he knew he could kiss his expensive Italian shoes goodbye.

Logically, he acknowledged that there was nothing left to do but ask Raven for the use of her phone so he could get out of this godforsaken slum. He raised his knuckles again, but paused before he knocked. Before his hand made contact, the door swung open.

“The suspense was killing me,” a faintly mocking voice piped out. “As to whether you’d ever get around to knocking.”

Raven turned her back to him and walked into the shop, leaving the decision to follow or not up to him. He couldn’t help but smile wryly and wonder how long she’d watched him contemplate the shop’s glass door.

He trailed behind her into the damp, dim store, enjoying the lines of her lush hips and gently sloping shoulders. She had her glorious hair up in an untidy knot this time, and a riot of wispy curls hung teasingly down her long neck. If he hadn’t left earlier, he’d likely be tasting that neck right now. Thinking of her fine collarbone and the upward thrust of her breasts made Ian’s stomach flutter. His desire to explore the entire territory inch by inch was even stronger than his innate mistrust.

It hadn’t even been a full year since he last had a woman, but it was long enough that, in combination with the memories of Raven’s oral manipulation, he could feel the flames of hunger lick his skin at the sight of her.

Raven paused at the counter, but kept her back to him as she grasped a large, heavy goblet. She brought the glass to her lips and drank, and Ian watched the motions of her throat jealously. Oh, to be drunk from like that cup!

“Wine?” he asked, needlessly, appreciating the shine of the candles through the ruby liquid.

“At least you didn’t accuse me of drinking blood,” she murmured and took another swallow.

“That was going to be my second guess,” he said with a lame chuckle, which she didn’t return.

“Find a phone?” she asked innocently, turning to him for the first time. Her voice contained a lower, earthier tone to it now. Ian concluded she used the wispy light tone earlier to tease him and get him inside. Her fluctuation between angel and temptress was mercurial and confusing, but alluring.

“I think you know that I didn’t,” he admitted. “There’s not much left alive out here.”

Raven gave a sad sort of smile, the same kind she used at the mention of her mother, but she didn’t reply. Instead, she filled a second goblet with wine from a silver decanter and extended it to him.

“Two glasses, huh? Knew I’d be returning, did you?”

“As you say, there’s not much to be found around here. The few shopkeepers left close at dark and run home to the suburbs. I figured you’d be back,” she answered calmly.

“No second sight or something?” he asked, half teasing. “You already have me at a disadvantage, if I recall, since you said you were expecting me earlier.”

He took the wine, and sniffed it cautiously. There was heady incense in the air that was already messing with his usually quick wits, so dope in the wine would be the end of him.

Again, she didn’t reply. Instead, she drained her glass, sat it down carefully on the counter, and turned away.

“The phone hasn’t moved,” she said, and gestured for him to help himself as she retreated out of sight through a thick beaded curtain dividing the store room from the back.

You Gotta Read Cover Contest

I'm pleased to see a bit of recognition for two of my loveliest covers, both by Carl J. Franklin and from my Rebel Ink Press series.

Currently, Like Magic, my Halloween erotic-romance, is nominated for best cover for July:

A real estate prospect turned out to be a prank, his car has been stolen, and he’s stranded in the worst neighborhood he can imagine on Halloween night. If he believed in magic, he would swear he’d been cursed. Ian’s night just got a lot weirder. And his love life just got a lot more interesting.

Last month, I am pleased to report that Bubbly, my erotic-romance for New Years, came in third:

Doing the Promo Rounds

Good heavens, folks - never write more holiday books than you handle marketing. Trust me on this! I'm just about dead trying to sell these things. Unwrapping Scrooge hit a good level of sales after the ARe mention, but the others still never took off. I guess my plans of focusing on the cheapest in the hopes of rising the other boats was ineffective. Oh well, live and learn - there's always next year.

If you want to check out all the millions of guest spots I've been doing, look here. A couple of those giveaways are still ongoing, so enter for a chance to win at WC and 30 Days of Decadence. I'll be at LASR and RomFan Reviews for giveaways next week.

So, the Christmas books are rolling to an end, and soon we'll be hailing the New Year, so now I better move on to the New Years book, Bubbly - why I did this to myself, I do not know!

However, it has been wonderful meeting all the new people I've been getting to know through all this promo, so - sales or no sales - no regrets. It's true - there is always next year, which is right around the corner!

Happy holidays!

PS - Like Magic and Charity are up for Best Cover and Best First Chapter for Nov on D. Bagby Presents, so if you care to, please check out the entries and vote! (The Halloween book also recently got a very nice review I'm very proud of, which you can find here, if you wish.)

NaNoWriMo Day 2: Updates and a Live Chat

Well, I have about 300 words so far. Cough.

Don't laugh - I teach on Mondays and Wednesdays, so my usual 1k isn't easy to get in the first couple of days of every week, especially with editing happening at the moment. I hope I can gather some extra steam over the Thurs-Sat stretch. However, I am willing to consider it might not be as easy to do 50k in 30 days while teaching 125 students and caring for a 3.5 year old as it was as a post-degree semi-unemployed mom to a 2.5 year old. Last year, I even managed to finish a few days early. That's not likely (at all) this year, but I'm digging in my heels.

Once revisions on the New Years story are finished (this weekend, no ifs, ands, or buts), I am ready to dive right in there!

I am not disclosing too many details about the NaNo 2011 story, but I think a few tibits might be in order. It is, naturally, a full length novel, a m/f contemporary romance the same as last year. Like last year, the full book will be longer than 50k, so I am using NaNo as just a boot in the tushy to get 50k down in the rough draft. This one involves an ex-children's entertainer turned dissipated playboy. That makes it sound like The Libertine meets The Wiggles, but I do promise there's no syphilis involved.

Anyway, we're off and running, even if it's been an excruciatingly slow start. I have my outline, character studies, break down, etc, done, so I just have to keep plugging away. I'll let you know how it goes.

~*~

In other news, Charity received a nice review recently, as did Like Magic, so I'm pretty happy there.

Also, please join the Decadent Publishing authors, including myself, at The Romance Studios for a live chat TONIGHT (9pm est) - I hear a few books will be given away during the trivia challenge, and the theme for tonight is holiday books! I am looking forward to it, and I promise I will endeavour to stay awake.

See you there, I hope!

Welcome, Bewitching Halloween Guys and Ghouls!

Welcome Blog Hoppers!

I love Halloween. It’s about as uncomplicated a holiday as they come. Nothing but fun – no visiting relatives or annoying major-production meals to offset the pleasure of candy. October has lovely weather and costumes are always a good time. And scary is always enjoyable… Within reason.

In my Halloween story, Like Magic, I have a fellow who spends the freakiest Halloween night of his life when he falls under the spell of a lovelorn witch – or does he?

I have never been perfectly certain how I feel about the paranormal. My logical side says it’s unlikely, but I’ve been around the block enough times to know nothing is certain, and one should never say never.

I was 19 when I worked at a dining hall in the old east coast university where I took my bachelors degree. The dining hall was old, stone and impressive, covered in ivy and looking stately. It even had a tragic past – in the 1920s, a fire gutted it, killing four students and the housekeeper, who were all said to haunt their various lifetime quarters still. The housekeeper had lived in a bedsit in the basement, beside the maintenance area and right next to the boiler. When the boiler exploded that fateful night, she had not the slightest chance of escape. Yet, it being the 1920s, when they rebuilt and fixed a bronze plaque to the refurbished building commemorating the loss, her name was not included in the memorial.

As a result, many reported that the restless spirit of the woman was not a happy one, and she’d had been known to harass students and employees.

When my supervisor, Nicole, went down to the basement, she was always nervous. She said it felt cold, and she heard noises. Once, a lightbulb exploded when she was halfway down the dark, steep stairs. The forgotten lady, it seems, did not care for Nicole. Eventually, Nicole took to sending Dishwasher Kevin down there at the end of shift to lock up and shut down the lights. I guess no one really much minded if an angry ghost got Dishwasher Kevin.

Anyway, one night I was filling in as headwaiter to a conference banquet while Nicole was off. It never occurred to me to make Dishwasher Kevin go down to turn off the lights and lock up before he left, which I regretted later.

After I had signed everybody out, and was alone doing my lock up, all of the bravado I had once had as an empowered, educated young woman who didn’t believe in ghosts flew out the window as I contemplated going down those steps. A part of me wanted to pretend I had forgotten to lock up down there, but I knew it would be my skin if something happened because I had turned chicken, and I needed the job. Besides, headwaiting paid better than serving, and if I ever wanted the chance to fill in for Nicole again, I had better get my butt down there.

So, I went.

Down the steps, singing a little song to keep from shaking, and to the back door. I locked up, and turned off the lights as I went. Then to the employee locker room, without incident. By that point, I was starting to feel pretty silly about having been afraid, and was thinking Nicole was an idiot. I didn’t feel any chill, and nothing was happening. Pfft! I knew it all along! There’s no such thing as ghosts!

I was so confident, I decided to stop and pee before finishing my rounds and making the trek home. I got in the stall, did my business, and then… dropped the frigging toilet paper! I watched helplessly as it bounced and then rolled out under the door. One of those moments where you stop and sigh, sagging a second or two before you decide what to do about your situation.

Then… In bounced the toilet paper, back in under the door!

Now, this was not a slanted floor. In fact, the drain under the sinks should have made the paper roll completely away from my stall. And there was nothing for that thing to bump into that would make it bounce back to me. Except…

I recall how hard my heart was pounding. I wanted to scream or hide or cry, and the hairs on my arms stood on end. Either the room got cold as ice, or I imagined it did, I don’t know which.

To be on the safe side, I called out, “Thank you!” in the most cheerful voice I could. I received no reply, expected no reply, really wanted no reply. But, if some spirit out there had done me a good turn, it seemed only polite. And prudent, considering the exploded light bulb.

Nothing else happened as I rushed away from the bathroom and ran up those steps to the safety of the dining hall kitchen. Nothing ever happened to me again down in the basement of that dining hall in my subsequent shifts, but I never again felt sure there wasn’t something down there.

There is a type of certainty we enjoy when we are young, when we can “know” what is what. As you age, you lose that luxury as things happen to make you question everything. After that night, I never was certain about the paranormal again. Now, I know enough to know there’s a lot of stuff out there I don’t know, I guess you could say.

So, that’s my ghost story. It isn’t thrilling, or very flattering to me since I was sitting on the can at the time, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget that night.

Happy Halloween, everybody! And, remember – always be polite to the non-living. Except for zombies. Those suckers, you better just shoot in the head.

There are Bad Days and then there are Really Bad Days

Yet, in all of them there's a little glimpse of okayness.

Monday, I had an awesome day - class went so well I almost floated home. I taught like a natural, the students were engaged, all was fine. Wednesday, however, I was so busy finishing marking and re-checking marks that I barely slept and had to cram in my lecture writing, planning on a light class... And then the lecture was eaten by my office computer before I could print it. And so was the Power Point slide presentation for class. Everything. I had to re-find the YouTube clips I had planned to show from memory, and just wing the lecture. Let's just say it was not a great day.

Thursday, panicking about writing the midterm up in time to meet the deadline for the printers, I wasn't allowed a moment's peace to work. Unexpected intrusion by the landlord, major hassle trying to track down computer-graded exam sheets instructions on the uni website (where no dept is ever called what it actually is any more), and a call from a scammer trying to strong arm me into letting them have remote access to my computer.

Today, I managed to get my exam in, and a lot of other stuff done, and was starting to feel pretty good... until I found a rejection letter in my email for a book of mine. Yes, these things happen, especially when you are trying to get into the bigger companies. I understand that, and am cool with it. It happens. But, when seen in the whole tapestry of crapulent luck I've been having this week, it just makes me laugh at the extreme overkill of this whole "cursed week" thing.

Recently, I've been kind of thinking of rolling back my writing and publishing, due to real life and day job and general fatigue. This seems like a good time to consider that, since I will soon be finished all my current contracts, and have no releases, subs or anything else looming. I might finish the current WIP, just for completeness sake, but a good rest for a couple months or years seems like not such a bad idea. From publishing, that is; likely not from writing. I've got decades left, I hope, to publish, so things will come as they may.

I'm okay with that, too.

However, today I also got a rather favourable review on Like Magic, so, as I said, the week hasn't been all bad.

Anyway, have a great weekend!

Six Sentence Sunday: Like Magic

Hello, and thanks for visiting. Continued appreciation for comments, as always.

This week's six sentences is from my newest release, a witchy Halloween erotic romance, LIKE MAGIC:
Ian leaned in close to her, breathing in her unique aroma. Pausing, holding his breath, he searched her face for signs of rejection and saw none. He didn’t believe in magic, or whatever it was mystical people thought they could do, but he was here now and the sweetness of her drew him in. They had this moment, and he would enjoy her. If believing her wish had been granted would revive her zest for life, he’d be happy for her. But, magic, he always believed, was nothing more than just what you made of your luck.

Feedback Needed: Him for the Holidays?

As my series for Rebel Ink Press starts to wind down, with three released and two more waiting in the wings, it's time to start thinking of them as a series, including promoting them as a group and coming up with a title for the paperback release in 2012. *squee*

This "series" isn't a series in the traditional sense - they don't have the same characters or the same setting. In some cases, their styles and subgenres are even different, though they are all short erotic-romances (or romantic-erotica). One is semi-paranormal, one is comedy, one is cowboy, a couple have May/December themes, and one is glam.

What connects them is that they all take place around a holiday, and all of them have mismatched couples, combining types of people who normally wouldn't have found each other - a cowboy and a city slicker, a jock and a virginal musician, a prof and a grad student, a bartender and a socialite, and a yuppie and a hippie-witch. All of them have heroes that I adore.

In thinking about titles, one of my rough attempts has kind of grown on me, which emphasizes the lovable heroes and the gift of finding love:

Him for the Holidays

So... What do you think? Catchy? Trite? Overdone? Predictable? Cute? Annoying?

I'm totally open to hearing your reactions, criticism, or other suggestions. I'd like to settle on one quite soon so I can start thinking of them as a group.

Thanks in advance!

Oct 3: LIKE MAGIC Hits E-Shelves Today!

I'm pleased to celebrate the release of my third holiday short for Rebel Ink Press, Like Magic, a short erotic romance with paranormal elements, for Halloween.

Here's a little sample (18+):
“When I saw you,” she said, averting her eyes as her cheeks flushed rose in the candlelight, “I thought you’d come because I asked you to.”
“You were expecting someone else?” he asked, releasing a small awkward chuckle. He’d heard of many forms of embarrassing social mishaps before, but never a case of mistaken oral sex.
“Not exactly,” she smiled. “But I asked for someone to come.”
“You were what? Casting love charms?”
“Yes,” she replied, without a hint of the irony his question had contained. “I called for a man – for a lover – and there you were. Perhaps I was mistaken. You can see how I misinterpreted things.”
Ian wasn’t a man prone to flights of whimsy, nor did he believe in magic. An investment councilor who researched development opportunities for a firm partially responsible for the gentrification of multiple dilapidated areas of the city, he was well known for his vision, but also his practical analysis of costs and benefits. Now, he began to mentally list who amongst his friends would’ve set him up with a call girl pretending to be a witch on a cold, wet Halloween night.
Ken, maybe. That would explain the missing car, since he’d have access to his office where his spare keys were located. He could’ve also known the false lead Ian pursued would bring him to just empty lots, not more old industrial blocks his clients liked to turn into yuppie studios. But would Ken, or any of his friends, actually shell out money for him to get a creepy blow job?
He knew they were all pulling for him to move past his breakup with Amanda and seek out fleshly adventures as a newly-single guy. Ian knew lately he was a bit of a drag at the office, at the gym, even on poker night. But this seemed to be a tad further than even his bonehead friends would go.
Of course, right about now his bachelor party would’ve been taking place, had Amanda not walked out, so perhaps this was their idea of a consolation prize.
“I don’t know who set this up,” he began with a disgusted snort, “but if you know anything about where my car is, I’ll just grab it and be on my way.
Looking baffled, she shook her head. A single concerned wrinkle marred the smoothness of her forehead.
“You’re very good,” Ian said, meaning both the innocent act and the services she’d provided.
Deciding he’d find a phone elsewhere, he turned on his heel and made for the exit.
“Be well,” he heard her whisper softly from behind him as he opened the heavy glass and wooden door. The tiny brass bells tinkled pitifully as he walked out into the downpour.
“Shit, guys,” he muttered to himself, cursing his weirdo friends. “You could’ve picked a warmer night to punk me.”
Like Magic will be available on Kindle, Nook, epub, ebook, Adobe, and other e-formats, via a selection of vendors. I will share the links as I find them.

And to unveil the brand new cover for Charity, my erotic-romance for Thanksgiving, also coming in October...

Charity Miller has spent her whole life in an urban island surrounded by the wilds of Montana, but she’s never ventured too far from her plans. But, when she heads into the Big Snowy Mountains to square a land deal one chilly November, her normally-professional self fades away. Maybe it’s the mountain air, or finally quitting her diet… Or maybe it’s “real-live-cowboy” Joshua Rollings and his many attractions that has her off balance.
Whatever it is, this Thanksgiving she could give herself a reason to be thankful the rest of her life.
Coming October 17, 2011, from Rebel Ink Press.

Summer Wrap-Up: Updates/Forecast on the WIPs

It's been a productive summer, spent editing and writing.

The first month or so was spent re-writing my NaNo 2011 novel, Textbook Romance, with the help of five wonderful betareaders. Then, I spent some time re-editing Unwrapping Scrooge for a Christmas print anthology. Goose and V-Day were re-vamped and released by Rebel Ink.

I did  flurry of new writing in August. The Halloween short, Like Magic, was written, read by a couple sweet people, and submitted to RIP for my holiday shorts series. It's with the editors now. I also managed to finish the Thanksgiving installment, and got it in only a day late. (They were nice to me about that.) The Thanksgiving one, Charity, is a nice, sexy cowboy one; I hope you'll all like it. It started out with another plot, but I had to shelf that beginning and start over with something lighter and more doable in under 15k.

Now, I've outlined and started the New Years one (Bubbly) - this one is a whole lot hotter than the other episodes. It's about a divorced socialite and successful designer who ducks her own New Years party to give life and love another whirl with "the hired help." Just right for a sparkly, fantastic New Years Eve romp!

Textbook Romance is now off to two companies, and I'm submitting it to a third in mid-September or so (staggered according to their response times). I keep revamping the sub letters/synopsis as I go, and tweaking the manuscript. My fingers remain ever-crossed. As always, I'll keep you updated.

The past couple of days have been spent blogging like mad to keep up with all the guest posts and interviews I promised to do over the summer. It doesn't seem like much work when you say yes at the time, but if you let them pile up... Oy!

So, what's next? After Bubbly is submitted for editing at RIP (aiming for September 15, if possible), I'm on to my planned paranormal/shifter dark erotica short/novella, which doesn't have a name yet (though I do have a publisher in mind!). Then, I'll finish the romantic-fantasy novella I started writing back in June but had to put away for other obligations. That one involves an "angel" figure, and has been named After Life. (I have a publisher in mind for that one, as well.) So, that all will likely take me up to nearly-NaNo time! After NaNo, I have plenty more planned - just today, I added a Mountie romance! But, for now, let's just say I'll be busy for a while.

It's insane how fast the year is flying by. This year, so far I've celebrated the release of three books (two of them twice), and am looking forward to at least four more. I got some very nice reviews. I've sold a few, promoted some, and generally kept busy. I am very much looking forward to having more contracts, new covers and releases to share with you throughout the end of 2011 and well into 2012.

If you want to see my complete WIP list, you can find it here.

And, that's a little update on where things are. I'll be in touch as things develop, I'm sure. :)

New Cover: Like Magic

The cover for my next release has been finalized. Like Magic is the Halloween installment in my series of holiday romantic-erotica shorts with Rebel Ink Press, and the cover is absolutely perfect! The book is still in editing, but I think it'll come out in October 2011.
