Happy (Upcoming) Birthday, Rebel Ink!

This weekend, Rebel Ink Press turns two years old!

Come celebrate with RIP and the Rebel authors. There's a Facebook "Meet the Writers" event on Friday (by invite only, so if you'd like an invite let me know!), and a blog hop all weekend long, starting at Rebel Reasoning. I'm pretty sure there will be excerpts and prizes all over!

Best of all, Rebel titles will be 25% off this weekend long AllRomanceEbooks!

(Including my own five Rebel titles, I hope!)

And don't forget the Writing Contest Rebel is running - deadline is August 25th!

Happy Birthday, Rebel Ink!

My Other Blog is a Microblog

Dear Blog:

It's time I told you the truth. This isn't easy for me to say, but... I've been seeing someone else. Actually, I've been seeing several other elses.

You see, you require big posts. Facebook and Twitter, they are happy if I toss them 160 characters once in a while. I can really share things with them, the way I never could with you. Your posts require a lot of effort and thought, and, well... I'm busy.

Kind of too busy to take words away from my WIP to meet your needy demands.

Besides, FB and Twitter like it when other people watch. You and me - we live in a bubble. On Twitter, over 500 people bear witness to our meetings. Sometimes, I think you and I are just too exclusive. I need to see other people once in a while.

So, I guess what I'm saying is - I like quickies. Oh, and it's not me, it's you.

Sorry,
AH

PS. Will be back tomorrow with an actual blog update, I promise.

Doing Interviews - From Both Sides

I've looked at interviews from both sides now - from asking and answering, from posting to linking... and still somehow, it's interviews' illusions I recall. I really don't know interviews at all.

Or something like that, anyway.

On this blog, I have posted several interesting interviews with authors who have very nicely given their time, and I've even done a few myself for other sites. So, why do we do them, and how is a good interview asked/answered?

Now, I admit that I cheat a little - I have pre-set questions that I send to the author, and leave it pretty informal and up to them which they answer and how they go about it. I figure, being authors, they know how to come up with interesting stuff with only slim prompting. I try to give a mix of advice/craft questions and random interest stuff, while still giving them the chance to talk about their books - which, after all, is why most authors do interviews. It is good exposure, we all hope.

This week on Facebook, I posted an open invite to authors to post their advice and opinions on interviews, and got some good tips.

In terms of answering, Stephanie Beck, author of David's Angel, recommends authors answer in ways that are "not a constant book pitch (no one wants to read that), not super trite (readers want to get to know you at least a little), and not choppy or left un-spellchecked (your writing style translates more than just into actual books)." I concur! I think a well-written interview is an important step in convincing potential readers your books are enjoyable - otherwise, they might be counter productive.

And self-promotion is really what interviews are about. Robert C. Roman, author of Road Mage, puts it well when he says, "The more places you put your information out, the more places people see it. Cross pollination of fanbases, so to speak."

Yet, conducting author interviews is also a form of promotion, if the truth is told. There are other reasons, of course - I need the regular content, so interviews are a big help there, and I also find it is a great way to make friends, get to know other authors, and to generate good karma for yourself in the community, as people tend to appreciate the chance to talk about their work, even on little blogs like mine. And I like doing things that people appreciate.

But, I can't lie and say blogging interviews is not without its promotional element, as well. Not only does it increase posts (which updates my Facebook) and therefore hits, I also hope many authors will pass the link to their interview on to their fans, which increases my name recognition (even a little) - all of those factors are good reasons to do author interviews. That and, of course, you want your blog to be interesting to book people, and readers like reading about authors, and find new books.

However, there is more to blogging interviews than just asking, "So, what are you selling?" I am still new to the game, so my questions aren't really refined yet, but I am working on it. It is important to ask good questions and to post interviews that attract readers.

So, what makes a good interview? Beck suggests matching the tenor of the questions to the nature of the author - funny, serious, dramatic, etc. This is a fine suggestion, though it requires some research on the part of the interviewer - but it makes for a stronger interview that is more interesting to read. Roman recommends not forgetting to let the author improvise, and not to ask questions that are too narrow - and to let them talk about their books. He also suggests that questions should be a mix of serious and fun. All very important things for making the interview not only interesting to read but more pleasant for authors to answer.

More than any who responded to my plea for advice, though, romance writer Jasmine Aherne is concerned with keeping the interview interesting for the readers. Her suggestions are, "Ask interesting questions, keep it fun. Make it ocassionally random. Post lots of pictures." All sound advice for keeping your blog visually and mentally stimulating, which ends up being better promotion all around. (And her concerns for fun, stimulating media are clearly reflected in her author site - one of my favourites!)

In sum, when you are author/book blogging the important thing to remember is that just doing it on autopilot is not always better than not doing it at all. If you are not interviewing in such a way that draws readers or in ways unpleasant to your authors, this would reflect poorly on your blog. In turn, when answering interviews if you don't put your best foot forward, you might be turning off potential readers rather than promoting yourself in your best light. Robert Roman is absolutely correct when he urges authors to be honest in asking/answering, but there are many ways to be honest while still being interesting and/or fun.

I will keep working on my interviews, both giving and conducting, and I hope you all continue reading! I'd love to hear what you think on this week's topic - feel free to leave a comment!

Excerpt Sunday Instant Replay!

Instead of providing another excerpt this week, I've decided to let the piece from last week ride, but posted directly on here for those unable to get to my FaceBook page. Enjoy!

Josie led him away from the house, allowing for his hobbled gait. Finally, she stopped and spread her arms out. “There!” She exclaimed it proudly, with small puffs of breath hanging white in the air. They were outside of the circle of light from the house, and Theo didn’t know what she meant for him to look at.

“What am I supposed to be seeing?”

“There,” she grabbed him, and pointed up, “look!

In the sky, a glowing milky-blue and green belt danced in the heavens. Clouds, shining in their reflected light, moved as if making way.

“What…?”

“Aurora borealis. The northern lights.”

Theo was aghast. He could not imagine that there were places in the world where such things were regularly seen. The light seemed to flow like water, blue changed into white, and vivid green ribbons highlighted the ripples.

“Amazing,” he whispered several times.

Josie watched Theo’s face. She was glad that he liked this place. She knew it was impressive, astounding even her and she had been born here. To a man from a dry and hot frontier, it must seem like magic.

And Theo saw it that way.

Suddenly, as if a Hollywood director had ordered it, a lone wolf howled in the distance. The effect was magnificent.

“True North, strong a free... ” Josie sighed, quoting the Canadian anthem in a breathless whisper.

Theo stood in awe of the wild beauty to which he was bearing witness. There were people who went their whole lives without witnessing something like this, and he was grateful to Josie for showing it to him.

“I can see why you love this place,” he looked down at her. “I could too, and I’m only just come.”

The air was thick with the words. Yes, Josie thought, I want you to love it, too. But she left the words unspoken. Mostly because she wasn't sure why she meant them so strongly. Instead, she removed her glove, and reached up to put her fingertips to his jaw line. He had not shaved, and bristly reddish stubble tantalized her hand. Green eyes captured golden ones, and both shone with the sky’s light. Josie raised herself up, laying herself vulnerable for his rejection, but he did not spurn her. He lowered his head to hers, and grasped her waist through her wool mack.

Her hands ran through that curly thick hair she had longed to touch, and she pressed her lips to his. Slowly, hotly, their lips and breath mingled, and the tingle of it danced along their mouths as the light did in the sky. Josie worked a hand beneath his jacket, and under his shirt where she found the warm skin of his strong back. She wanted this kiss as she wanted every next breath. She made a small, urging noise in her throat, primitive in its demand for more.

Theo’s big hand slid with surprising softness from her hip. It covered her belly for a moment, leaving it for the ridge of her rib cage. Up it traveled, until it grazed just beneath the softness of her breast.

Sighing, Theo deepened the kiss, demanding as much as she could give.

Josie responded in kind, opening her lips in bold invitation. This time he accepted.

The kiss invaded her senses, her mouth being delved for its secrets, and she offered no resistance. Josie reveled in the masculine sound of his breath, as it came now in quiet but excited huffs. The soft sounds of their lips on one another were like the finest music to her. It caused her heart to thump against her chest, as if it were calling to his.

It lasted seconds or minutes, she did not know, but it ended too quickly. He lifted his head and watched the deprivation slide across her features.

She opened dazzled eyes, lidded with not-yet-abandoned arousal.

“Christ,” he whispered.

Josie smiled up to him. She could tell by his face that he was far from unaffected by that kiss. But he sat her away from him and straightened to his full height, taking a staggering step back from her.

“I...” he started, but stopped. Finally he just limped away, back into the house.

Josie blinked after him. Untried feelings still coursed through her veins, and now he was gone. She felt bereft. He was running from her, again.

Mentally, she rolled up her sleeves, and followed him in.
