New Release: What Kings Ate and Wizards Drank by Krista D. Ball

New this week on Kindle, and coming soon to Kobo and other formats, including paperback - What Kings Ate and Wizards Drank, a Fantasy Lover's Food Guide.

Equal parts writer’s guide, comedy, and historical cookbook, fantasy author Krista D. Ball takes readers on a journey into the depths of epic fantasy’s obsession with rabbit stew and teaches them how to catch the blasted creatures, how to move armies across enemy territories without anyone starving to death, and what a medieval pantry should look like when your heroine is seducing the hero.

Learn how long to cook a salted cow tongue, how best to serve salt fish, what a “brewis” is (hint: it isn’t beer), how an airship captain would make breakfast, how to preserve just about anything, and why those dairy maids all have ample hips.

What Kings Ate will give writers of historical and fantastical genres the tools to create new conflicts in their stories, as well as add authenticity to their worlds, all the while giving food history lovers a taste of the past with original recipes and historical notes.

A little taste:

Pound Cake

In the 16th century, for example, all cakes were made with yeast. However, the Germans and British eventually moved to using eggs to raise their cakes. In Jane Austen’s time, cakes were going through that transition, where recipe books like Rundell’s A New System of Domestic Cookery were giving recipes for both kinds of cakes. By the time Mrs. Beeton put out her books in the Victorian era, most cakes were being made with eggs, and only poor people were using yeast to raise their cakes.

Today, pound cake is a yellow cake, browned on the outside. It’s often given terms like “light” and “moist.” While this cake is moist, I’m not sure the term “light” can ever be applied to this one.

Ingredients:
  • 1 lb butter
  • 1 lb sugar
  • 8 eggs
  • 1 lb flour
  • 1 tsp each nutmeg and cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • 2 tbsp caraway seeds
  • 6oz wine
Instructions:
  1. Beat a pound of butter into a cream.
  2. Separate the yolk and whites from the eggs and beat each in separate bowls.
  3. Combine all of the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix the wet and dry ingredients. Your hero’s love interest will need to hand-beat this for a full hour, so he better appreciate it when she (or he) gives it to him! (Modern chefs can use a hand mixer for 7-8 minutes.)
  5. Butter a baking pan and bake it for one hour in a “quick” oven (375 degrees F).

Find it on Amazon now!

~*~

And a new, previously unreleased story for St Patrick's Day: Cormack's Luck, exclusive to this anthology!

American writer Katie Cormack inherited more than a cottage from her wild Irish father, but also his wit, his stories and his family’s secret burden. Hiding away in the Irish countryside she’d always dreamed of, she communes with the fairies and beasts of her fantasy and folklore. When a local doctor comes down on her for filling his young son’s head with “nonsense”, Katie must show them both that not even St Patrick himself could drive all the dragons out of their imaginations. In the process, she might be able to reverse a wrong that has been hanging over the Cormacks for five generations, one that has brought them all together for the season of renewal.

Textbook Romance now available in PRINT!

Last Christmas, Decadent Publishing became the first company to publish one of my adult novellas in paper, along with several other authors, in a holiday anthology. That was thrilling, and I am so proud to have that on my shelf.

But, as of today, I now have a novel all of my own in paperback, and I am over the moon!

Please know I mean no slight against ebooks when I say this is a dream come true. When I was a child and began writing my "books," I naturally dreamed of them being in paper form. Things have come a long way since then. (Frankly, though, I knew right away when watching Star Trek: TNG and admiring their little electronic reading devices that that was where literature would wind up, so I'm not surprised by the popularity of the Kindle, Nook, Kobo, etc.) I am always pleased when one of my works becomes available to readers with ereading devices, of course. But, somewhere deep inside, a little 12 year old me is jumping up and down right now.

I now have a paperback novel! Like, for reals! Like, one I can send my Mum! (I am really happy, so please pardon the gushing.) I also couldn't be prouder that it is this novel, Textbook Romance, a book I am pleased to present. Aside from my first novel, Strings Attached, this one is closest to my heart.

Take a look at the NEW print edition page right here! I'm pretty sure it will be available on Amazon and B&N, as well, soon, and should also be available at any bookstore that does special orders.

Thank you, Pink Petal Books! You've made a dream come true for me.

More Textbook Romance for #SampleSunday

A fresh excerpt from my newest novel, Textbook Romance:

Chase after love? As a single mother, Professor Liberty Sullivan knows better. Between her flighty mother and a disastrous history with men, she's pretty much soured on the whole concept of romance. Personal freedom and self-reliance are her new guiding mantras. Raising her son and being a career star are the most important things now.

Then she meets Seth.

An ex-cop who’s making a new life for himself and his daughter, Seth Webster has every reason to play it safe. Then he meets Liberty. Prickly about love, following some crazy anti-romance curriculum, she still makes Seth's heart pound. And a lifetime of cop instinct tells him he's about to teach Liberty that this romance will be anything but by the book.

Libby shut the heavy front door with a deep sigh. Seth was, by far, the most sweetly romantic and sensual man she’d ever met. She had once thought Carson was dangerous… She could now see that Seth was potentially ten times more addictive.

But, at the moment, she couldn’t bring herself to worry about it.

Entering her bathroom, she dropped her robe and flipped on the shower. Her muscles had a strange heavy ache to them this morning, one that seemed vaguely familiar but also felt totally unique. The signs of Seth’s lovemaking were written all over her and she gloried in the reflection looking back at her in the mirror. From the tangled head of curls to the faint blue thumbprint he’d accidentally left at some point on her right hip, she was marked as a well-loved woman, and it felt terrific.

He’d brought her to long-awaited climax no less than five times the night before, and once more early this morning, and she was amazed by the fact that her body still yearned for him. He’d turned her into a wanton, clearly, and she chuckled at the thought. Her! Of all people, he had revived the wanton in her. If she hadn’t experienced it herself, she’d never have believed it.

Stepping under the hot, hard spray of the water, she soaked in the warmth and felt her overworked muscles begin to soften. He’d been eager for her to take the initiative, and she’d made love to him just as often as he had to her, leaving her a bit sore from the exertion.

Though she’d risen early and they’d had a busy night, she wasn’t exhausted. She’d slept well and deeply, enjoying the cocoon of his body. She didn’t even need to blame her thick sleep on the wine this time. It’d been the pure bliss and security of sleeping in a devoted set of male arms.

But how long will those arms be here?

Libby angrily swept aside the treacherous voice of reason. She didn’t want to doubt anything right now. But nearly a decade of mistrust born from experience was a hard habit to break, and she felt the haze of happiness start to drift away from her against her will.

Don’t get too used to those arms, the voice warned her. When he’s gone, you’ll have to sleep without them.

Cruel rationality began to seep into the morning with the encroaching sunlight, and she had the immature impulse to call Seth’s cell in the hopes that his voice would help her shut out what her bitter instincts whispered to her. She wanted to call him, to beg him to say more sweet things to allay these fears. To tell her he wanted to see her again and again and again, and that he’d never tire of her – never find anyone else. But she knew enough to know that no one could promise that, and if she couldn’t triumph over these fears by herself, she’d be lost.

And she did want to triumph over them, didn’t she?

Pouring a puddle of conditioner into her palm, she massaged the floral mixture into her hair, and considered which Libby was the real Libby – the wanton lover or the disciplined isolationist? It wasn’t an answer that came easily, and she felt a small slide of fear that she’d gone too long this way to change now.

She paused from washing her hair and stood in shock for a moment. The realization that the reason her intelligence and her heart were both going crazy was one and the same – somewhere along the way, she’d fallen in love with Seth. In a way that not even Carson had inspired. And she was scared of losing him as much as she was of embracing him.

So, now she had to decide which possibility scared her more.

Read the first chapter here.

What's your Romantic Style?

Still celebrating my new release! Thanks for stopping by.

Textbook Romance is the story of Libby, a university professor who is decidedly anti-romance. Her mother, who became pregnant as a teen by the "love of her life", who promptly ditched her, has never given up on the foolish notion of The One, a quest that disrupted Libby's life constantly as a child.

And, to her undying shame, something very similar happened to Libby herself. The "love of her life" turned out to be just the "lust of her (and a dozen other women's) life", and she can't believe she fell for it. But only once. Now, Libby has learned her lesson, for life. Or so she tells herself.

Libby's life goal is to avoid romance. She can't stand the way people repeatedly lose sight of what's "important" for the sake of love, which she believes to be a sham. And Libby should know - not only is her academic work all about researching the roots of romance, but she secretly writes romance novels on the sly!

Enter Seth, an ex-cop with a teen daughter. Seth has a mom who taught him how Real Love is supposed to work. Widowed at a young age, his mother never stopped loving her husband and instilling in her kids the belief that real love takes effort, courage and dedication. Even after his wife left him for an internet crush, Seth still believes Real Love is waiting for everyone, as long as you have the fortitude to grad a hold of it.

Textbook Romance is about the kinds of romantic options open to us. Seth, and his mother, and their devotional approach to marriage. Seth's ex, who treats internet chat rooms like a man-market. Libby's ex whose life goal is to spread the love around as much as possible before he's put out to pasture. Libby's mom, with stars in her eyes, who never seems to find anyone but "Leavers." And Libby, who has seen so many Leavers, she forgot there are "Stayers," too.

I had a great deal of fun writing a romance novel that explores... well... romance. There are multiple "styles" of love going on in this book, with each character thinking their way is the right way, given the influences and life experiences they have behind them. It's amazing how our parents, friends, lovers, ex-lovers, kids, and so forth, mold our lives, and our approach to love.

I guess it's too personal to ask your style of love, but would you care to share your views on love, whether or not you think True Love even exists, or who influenced you as to what to do (or what not to do) in the Quest for True Love?

All weekend long, comments on these blog posts will enter you to win an ebook copy of my new contemporary romance novel, Textbook Romance, courtesy of Pink Petal Books. (18+ only, please!) Contest ends Monday, June 25, 2012, at 12pm EST.

Teacher Crushes, Anyone?

Continuing my celebration for the release of Textbook Romance, let's discuss something - falling in love with Teacher.

Now, Textbook Romance involves a mature student and a university prof who fall in love, but it isn't a "teaching the teacher" kind of book. I have nothing against those, really, but that's not at the core of this one.

Still, I have to admit there is a sort of special attraction to teachers. I myself had a couple memorable teacher crushes, particularly in high school when all the boys around me where less than intellectually stimulating.

One of them, we'll call him Mr M (just in case anyone puts two and two together in the vast interwebs of embarrassment), was at the tail-end of my senior high sentence. In retrospect, aside from his startling blue eyes, he was no heart throb, but he was so gorgeously intelligent. Being a word-inclined teenager in a very rural place, where most people considered the TV Guide their favourite literature, this was overwhelmingly attractive. He and I even went on a little field trip together once, to complete an advanced project I was doing in Library Sciences (yes, I was a dork), just he and I. sigh.

Alas, I was a chicken, and never said anything, and he, well, he was a professional adult who likely never even noticed me beyond the "enjoyable, well-behaved, keener-student" level. Still, Mr M has skittered around the edges of my imagination ever since.

Thanks to all those teacher-crushes, I developed a strong belief that intelligence and maturity are essential in who I see as an attractive person. School teaches us a lot more than we even realize at the time; way beyond Library Sciences.

So, stop by and tell me about your teacher crush in the comments below.

Remember, all comments here between Friday and Monday morning will be entered to win an ebook copy of my new contemporary romance novel Textbook Romance, courtesy of Pink Petal Books. (Over 18 only, please.) Contest ends Monday, June 25, 2012, at 12pm EST.

Celebrating my New Release, Textbook Romance!

All weekend long, I will be proclaiming the News: Textbook Romance is now open for business!

Today, I have spent much of my time dancing with the devil in the pale moon light, which is also known as putting together a website for the book.

And you can finally see it here!

The site has loads of info about the book - the whole first chapter, some "Behind the Scenes" secrets, the deleted Prologue, and even a picture of me in my graduation get up!

And, low and behold, the book's already starting to crop up for sale on a few sites other than Pink Petal's (where, incidentally, it's still on sale).

So, check out the new website, check out the new book, and keep checking back here. Tomorrow, I'll have some fun, and Sunday we'll have a brand new excerpt!

PLUS, share this news and/or leave a comment on any of these posts, and you might walk away with a copy of the ebook, courtesy of Pink Petal Books!

Comment on the book, or tell me about a teacher crush, or let me know you've shared the book around, whatever you want, and you'll automatically be entered. Over 18, only, please.

Party time, indeed!

Congrats to Wendy Smith - New Debut Release, Chase's Love!

Chase's Love

Rachel wasn't looking for love. As a matter of fact, she'd written off men altogether as the last thing she wanted in her life was another controlling jerk. At least that was the plan until the guy of her dreams walked into her life.

Chase Jamison had just got out of the military and was working toward expanding the business he started with his brother and best friends. He had a goal and he was focused. Never in a million years did Chase expect to find the sexiest woman on earth at his club.

As Chase and Rachel come together and try to find happiness, one question remains. Will Rachel's ex-lover step in and keep the pair from finding true love?

Wendy, what does it feel like to have a book published?

That is a great question while I was sitting at Olive Garden talking to one of my best friends we were discussing how after 6 months of just doing it my first book is going to be published. I told her that it almost seems surreal to me; after all this all started as a dare at her house between my husband and myself. See for some reason my hubby thought that since I buy so many books that they might be considered tax deductible. Dawnn and I laughed so hard at that thought; then he suggested that since we thought that it was so funny that we should write a book. Well we went home, I sat down in front of my computer and the next thing you know I had over 3000 words and Chase, Rachel, Toni, Allison, Drake, Joey and Mike were coming to life. Since that time my partner in pen, Mollie Fiegel, and myself have developed and watched these characters come to life, grow, love, hate, hurt and rejoice in our books. We also created a second set of books that came to me one morning in the shower, Ok, I know that is probably not the most creative way to have an idea but seriously I will wake up and have an idea so I put it on paper or run it past Mollie on our way to work.

I am super excited and thrilled that after we submitted Chase’s Love that it was accepted and now being published. I just hope that everyone that reads it is as thrilled as I am with the book.

Congrats, Wendy!

New Paperback Release: Yule Be Mine Volume 2!

Cruising GoodReads, I noticed that a new book had been added to my name - Decadent Publishing has already released the Yule Be Mine vol 2 paperback Christmas romance anthology!

It's available now for purchase on Amazon and will be available via B&N on November 28.

(Words cannot describe how cool it is to be "available in paperback"!)

This anthology, containing four Christmas novellas from last year's Decadent ebook releases, is the non-erotic volume, and contains my book Unwrapping Scrooge and books from KT Grant, Seleste deLaney and A. Faris.

The Ghost of Vampire Present by Seleste deLaney – Jocelyn has finally found her knight in shining armor in Chad, and ghosts are the last thing on her mind. Even when one shows up in her bedroom on Christmas Eve, Jocelyn's a bit more concerned about the other guests on the agenda. She'd prefer to never see another vampire, and the ghost tells her to expect not one, but three…

Last Christmas by A. Faris – ‘Tis the season to be merry…’ But not when you’re on the trail of a time insurgent, and facing a demon’s servant at every turn. For Nadine, Christmas is a jinx. Two deaths in the family and an estrangement, all on the blessed occasion, she spends every Christmas alone since. A knock on her door reveals a mysterious stranger, a stranger who kisses sweet, knows her soul and offers his heart with no reservations. Not everything is as it seems, however, with more at stake than Nadine thinks…

The Christmas Fantasy by KT Grant – On a mission to lose her virginity before her thirtieth birthday on Christmas Day, Mandy Lockeheart plans to seduce the only man she’s ever loved; her brother’s best friend, firefighter Jackson Montgomery. With the sexy new body she’s worked hard to earn, she’s certain she can convince him to fulfill her fantasies…

Unwrapping Scrooge by Anne Holly – Bestselling author Kale McKinnon is a modern Scrooge – eccentric, misanthropic and reclusive, made bitter by the coldness of his wealthy family. But when optimistic Canadian graduate student Molly Gillis visits Oxford and invades his space, he realizes Christmas is about to change for him forever. But can he make her stay, and force himself to un-Scrooge enough to be the right man for her?

So, get it while it's hot. It would make a great holiday present, but your friends and family have enough stuff - get it for yourself, instead.

Official Release: My New Romance, Charity

Today, my new erotic romance for Thanksgiving, Charity, makes its official debut from Rebel Ink Press. It's the fourth installment of my five-story holiday series, and my very first cowboy romance.
Charity Miller has spent her whole life in an urban island surrounded by the wilds of Montana where she’s never ventured too far from her plans. But when she heads into the Big Snowy Mountains to square a land deal one chilly November, her normally-professional self fades away. Maybe it’s the mountain air or finally quitting her diet. Or maybe it’s “real-live-cowboy” Joshua Rollings and his many attractions that has her off balance.
Whatever it is, this Thanksgiving could give her a reason to be thankful for the rest of her life.
Cowboys were something I always avoided. I read quite a few cowboy romances, since I basically read everything I lay my hands on, but I never really thought to write one. Cowboys didn't seem to suit my ideal hero, who I prefer to be funny, cute and a bit nerdy or awkward. I have written ranchers, but never a full-on American cowboy before. But then, faced with "how do I make a story specifically capturing the spirit of Thanksgiving?" it seemed natural to me - a salt of the earth, rooted in the land, cowboy.

But, since I'm the writer, you shouldn't expect the run-of-the-mill romance hero cowboy, either.

I'm happy to present Charity, which is something of an homage to the sweet, happy romance novels of my youth. Sometimes sappy, a wee bit silly, and a lot sensual.

I hope you enjoy it!

Oct 3: LIKE MAGIC Hits E-Shelves Today!

I'm pleased to celebrate the release of my third holiday short for Rebel Ink Press, Like Magic, a short erotic romance with paranormal elements, for Halloween.

Ian Hannigan was having the worst day of his life. A real estate prospect turned out to be a prank, his car has been stolen, and he’s stranded in the worst neighborhood he can imagine on Halloween night. If he believed in magic, he would swear he’d been cursed. Nothing could possibly make this day any worse or better… That is, nothing but Raven, a mysterious occult shop owner who not only claims to be a witch, but insists that she summoned him as the answer to her aching loneliness. Ian’s night just got a lot weirder. And his love life just got a lot more interesting.

Here's a little sample (18+):
“When I saw you,” she said, averting her eyes as her cheeks flushed rose in the candlelight, “I thought you’d come because I asked you to.”
“You were expecting someone else?” he asked, releasing a small awkward chuckle. He’d heard of many forms of embarrassing social mishaps before, but never a case of mistaken oral sex.
“Not exactly,” she smiled. “But I asked for someone to come.”
“You were what? Casting love charms?”
“Yes,” she replied, without a hint of the irony his question had contained. “I called for a man – for a lover – and there you were. Perhaps I was mistaken. You can see how I misinterpreted things.”
Ian wasn’t a man prone to flights of whimsy, nor did he believe in magic. An investment councilor who researched development opportunities for a firm partially responsible for the gentrification of multiple dilapidated areas of the city, he was well known for his vision, but also his practical analysis of costs and benefits. Now, he began to mentally list who amongst his friends would’ve set him up with a call girl pretending to be a witch on a cold, wet Halloween night.
Ken, maybe. That would explain the missing car, since he’d have access to his office where his spare keys were located. He could’ve also known the false lead Ian pursued would bring him to just empty lots, not more old industrial blocks his clients liked to turn into yuppie studios. But would Ken, or any of his friends, actually shell out money for him to get a creepy blow job?
He knew they were all pulling for him to move past his breakup with Amanda and seek out fleshly adventures as a newly-single guy. Ian knew lately he was a bit of a drag at the office, at the gym, even on poker night. But this seemed to be a tad further than even his bonehead friends would go.
Of course, right about now his bachelor party would’ve been taking place, had Amanda not walked out, so perhaps this was their idea of a consolation prize.
“I don’t know who set this up,” he began with a disgusted snort, “but if you know anything about where my car is, I’ll just grab it and be on my way.
Looking baffled, she shook her head. A single concerned wrinkle marred the smoothness of her forehead.
“You’re very good,” Ian said, meaning both the innocent act and the services she’d provided.
Deciding he’d find a phone elsewhere, he turned on his heel and made for the exit.
“Be well,” he heard her whisper softly from behind him as he opened the heavy glass and wooden door. The tiny brass bells tinkled pitifully as he walked out into the downpour.
“Shit, guys,” he muttered to himself, cursing his weirdo friends. “You could’ve picked a warmer night to punk me.”
Like Magic will be available on Kindle, Nook, epub, ebook, Adobe, and other e-formats, via a selection of vendors. I will share the links as I find them.

Now Available at:

Thanks for stopping by! Leave me a comment between now and midnight tonight for a chance to win a copy of Like Magic in ARC PDF, as soon as I get one from the publisher! (18+ only.)

New Release: V-Day

My erotic romantic-comedy V-Day returned to the living yesterday, thanks to the good folks at Rebel Ink!

It all started with a serenade…

A family like Daniel’s and the solitary pursuit of musical excellence is enough to make a young man crazy. No wonder all Daniel Vouks dreams of is getting away. He knows his violin will take him places in life, but the only place he really wants to be is next door. He’s been in love with his neighbor since he was fourteen, but can he ever make her see him as more than just a lovesick kid?

V-Day is the story of a Valentine's Day weekend Daniel fears he may regret, but will never, ever forget.

I have a real soft spot for this book. It was my first go at light humour blended into my erotica/romance, and I admit the hero is one of my favourites. Author Jasmine Aherne was kind of enough to read the ARC I sent her, and you can read the review here. I especially like that she enjoyed my description of Daniel as "a cross between Harry Potter and Franz Kafka". :)

So far, a few links (I will update this post as I find more, or more go live):
If you're interested, you can find an excerpt here.

I love new releases!

Strings Attached NOW AVAILABLE!

A contemporary romance novel by Anne Holly

Wild Horse Press, released May 31, 2011

How do you relate to a man who doesn’t want you to?

Josie Sergeant has learned one thing by carving out her living from the wilds of the Canadian north: perseverance, optimism and the willingness to do what has to be done can overcome even the harshest of obstacles. Life has taught Theo Sabich, a fellow rancher from Australia, that optimism is a fool’s hope.

When their beloved siblings’ impetuous marriage plans pit Josie and Theo against one another to defend their families, they find more than they bargain for. And when they start seeing each other as more than enemies, they face their greatest challenge – finding the courage to reach out for happiness.

Under the northern lights, their attraction ignites beyond their control… The trouble is a one-time “no strings attached” release of passion is easier said than done when love is hanging by a thread.

You’ve Hit a Wall, Now What? Advice from Lila Munro

You know the proverbial wall I dare speak of. The one that is erected in front of every writer right in the middle of the greatest scene they’ve ever written. The one that muffles the voices of their characters that reside just on the other side of it. The one that they bang their head on wondering why and screaming at the muse gods. So, what does one do? Climb over, dig under, go around?

Well, I for one am not much of a climber. I’m short and well, too many chocolates have settled in my derrière. I’m not much of a digger. That requires some degree of brute strength, which I do possess some degree of but prefer to reserve for situations that actually require me to exert that sort of energy. Go around? That seems feasible with the appropriate GPS capabilities. But what are the capability requirements? Well, I think they are different for each individual person. I’ll share my techniques, then tell you what I think the universal cure all is for this dreaded WBD (Writer’s Block Disease), then I’ll let you decide for you what is best for you.

A few months back at the beginning of summer, I was stricken with such a case of this horrible disease I thought I should never recover from it. Many people know something of this story as I talked about it at length on my own blog as the events unfolded. You see, my heroes have always been marines. I’m married to one and that’s where I take my inspiration from for my military men in all the hot stories I write. In June, they completely annihilated my view of them as heroes. Well, that’s not entirely right. A few of the proud were responsible for it. A terrible accident happened on the beach (which happens to be my place of center) and I watched as eight or so of them stood by idly and did nothing to help. They didn’t even ask if they could help. It sickened me and rocked me to the core. These were not marines the likes of which I worship.

Needless to say, the novel I was working on had a terrific marine at its center, and he ran for cover as I raged about the events of that day and didn’t speak to me for a long time after. My place of center, the beach side, was also shattered and I couldn’t even go there to find my focus. I was adrift without a rudder and the paddle broke—not a good place to be. Well, my husband helped a bit with things—he listened to me yell for hours on end about the Marine Corps and its wavering values, then he did something so incredibly strong and heartfelt. He inadvertently took me to the shore. Yes, he tricked me. Once I saw the water again, I perked up and could feel myself righting again. With a lighter heart I came home and sat down at this keyboard, but Alec was still hunkered down behind the screen trembling. I told him, “Okay, Alec, I can do this with our without you, if you want a say in how you get the girl, you better come out.” Then I began to type—it took a few pages and he peeked around the edge of the screen and watched me whacking away furiously. Then he turned and looked up—unhappy with the way the events were unfolding he came out and started to talk to me again.

Bottom line—never let your center be rocked and keep writing no matter what. In other words, don’t let your confidence waver and even if you’re not in the mood…write, write, write. Even if it makes no sense, even if later you tear it all to pieces, write. Sooner or later your muse and your characters will get the picture, step off the picket line and help for fear of losing their jobs. I promise. It works.

Now I’d like to introduce you to my new novel that hit e-shelves January 18 at ARe through Rebel Ink Press for $5.99. It is a 58,000 word contemporary romance with erotic overtones and is entitled A Slower Lower Love.

Here’s a bit about the story:

When running isn’t the answer,

Cait O’Kelley loved Bryce Delaney with all her heart. But loving him scared the hell out of her. She didn’t want to settle for being married to a cop and having his children. She wanted more. Unfortunately, more came with a price. After leaving her small home town for more glamorous life and working her way up the corporate ladder, a whirlwind affair with the boss’s son tears her world apart. On the brink of losing everything she’s worked for, she had to make a decision.

and going back seems impossible,

After eight years of living without her, Bryce finds himself tasked with the job of watching over Cait during her week long stay at her parent’s beach house in Bethany. She’s come there to sort her life out and while she’s contemplating her future, they discover the fireworks are still there. But can they ever go back to where they once were? As his secrets begin to surface, he sees only one way to save her. He disappears without a trace leaving Cait behind to pick up the pieces and deal with a whole host of new problems. One of which she can’t explain away or hide.

can you find middle ground?

With Bryce out of the picture, his brother, Kurt, finds what he’s wanted a lifetime handed to him on a silver platter. After watching Cait and Bryce toy with each other for fifteen years, he steps up to the plate. He’s always wanted her and now is his chance. But is he strong enough to ground Cait and keep her from making yet another mistake? Which brother will win her heart and show her that a slower lower love is enough?

I’d like to share a short excerpt with your readers, Anne. I hope they enjoy it.
The sound of seagulls screeching like nails on a chalkboard pulled Cait out of the peaceful place somewhere between sleep and wake she’d been dozing in and out of most of the morning. The raucous cacophony was far too close for comfort. Pushing up on her forearms in the warm soft sand, she peeled her eyes open. A summer browned boy that looked to be around ten or eleven stood a few yards away with a clear plastic bag full of bread crusts. The band of ivory and gray birds dipping and swooping behind him cast shadows over her and her fluffy yellow beach towel. Did the boy have no sense at all? Probably the offspring of interlopers, he obviously didn’t realize the scavenging birds would never leave if you fed them just once.

“Hey, kid,” she shouted. “Go somewhere else with your bag of bread.”

She didn’t want to share her space with a child and his flock of motley birds. Why wasn’t he back in school anyway? It was well past Labor Day.

He glanced over at her, pulled a piece of crust from the bag, and waved it in the air blatantly ignoring her wishes to be left alone.

Hating to be taunted, she started to get up. “I said get down the beach you scrawny urchin, this isn’t public access, so go.”

After watching him dart away with the gulls not far behind, she lowered herself back on her towel and closed her eyes again. She’d come here to rest and try to piece her life back together, not deal with truants.

It was her mother’s suggestion that she take a week at the beach house after the last holiday weekend of summer. She’d finally agreed after giving the idea some serious pause. There were too many memories here she didn’t particularly care to rehash. It had seemed at the time, however, a better alternative than being secluded in her town home for one more day alone. But if her first morning was any indication as to what her stay was going to be like, she might well change her mind and go back to Baltimore before sundown.

For now, at least, here she was. The very place that eight years ago she’d absconded like it was infested with the plague. Fled for a life outside the confines of small town life to anywhere bigger USA.

It just happened that anywhere bigger at the time was Pittsburg. She’d found a job and earned a degree at the university. Then she’d gone on to land a gig at one of the nation’s biggest marketing firms in Baltimore. After working her way up from the mail room, she’d been in charge of some very affluent client accounts. Always looking for more though, that hadn’t been enough fast enough. No. She wanted everything, and everything came with a price.

After practically throwing herself on him, she’d landed the bosses son. As far as Jamison Curtis and all their friends were concerned, they were a match made in heaven.

They both had good heads for business and eyes on the brass ring attitudes, and after a brief courtship they had been engaged to be married.

They weren’t a match made in heaven in her book though. He wasn’t much for wild abandon in the sack. In fact, he was more the missionary type, though she could concede it was usually satisfying enough. He liked the opera, while she preferred alternative rock. He wanted steak every night and she would have chosen boiled crabs anytime. On top of all that, she’d known she didn’t love him. What did she expect hooking up with someone that wasn’t raised on the eastern shore, south of the Mason Dixon, where life was simpler? But wasn’t that what she had run from all that time ago?

For her he was just a mere rung on the ladder of success, the toll to a better life. At least that was what she believed until three months ago when it all came crashing down around her like a skyscraper after an earthquake.

Feelings complicated things, and she didn’t want complicated. He, however, had apparently let himself fall hopelessly in love with her and it wasn’t until their engagement party at a five star hotel on the inner harbor that she fully realized that. She overheard him talking to his brother and inadvertently discovered how he couldn’t wait until they honeymooned in Paris, and actually hoped they came home expecting their first born. That she hadn’t counted on. After Jamison left Haden standing on the balcony overlooking the harbor, she had confronted him. They had already had the children or no children discussion and she had made it perfectly clear that they weren’t in the equation for her right now, and maybe indefinitely.

That led to an argument right there in the ballroom that escalated until all she heard was the sound of their two voices reaching a piercing pitch. The band had stopped playing and all their friends ceased what they were doing to stare at them there in the middle of the floor spearing each other through with glaring eyes. The silence had been even more clamorous than the sound of their arguing. That was the point at which the relationship had snapped in two like a dry twig. Pop! It was over.

She’d composed herself and tried to salvage some of her dignity. After apologizing to their guests, she made a hasty exit to take a cab home. Like a coward, she left Jamison there to put out the blaze she knew would consume Curtis Industries by Monday morning.

After ignoring his calls all day Sunday, the phone finally quit ringing. He hadn’t bothered leaving any messages. Nothing he could say, and nothing she could do, would make things right anyway. She’d torn another man down and crushed him. Only this time she was a grown woman and it was no longer a game of hurt feelings. Her livelihood would be affected by her stupid selfish actions.

Monday morning she’d slipped into the Curtis building downtown under the cover of pre-dawn. It only took minutes to clear her desk and type out her resignation.

She knew she could never set foot in the office again, and even if she could face the humiliation of it, chances were she’d be fired and asked to leave. After depositing the letter on Jamison’s desk, and laying the two carat Marquis cut engagement ring on top of it, she left like the coward she was and went home to try to figure out what to do next.

Three months later, she still hadn’t figured it out. She had no job, no Christmas wedding to plan, and, if the tides of fate didn’t turn in her favor soon and leave some source of income at her doorstep, she would soon have no gorgeous town home. Her
emergency funds were vaporizing and she had received so many rejection notices from prospective employers that she now suspected the elder Curtis of blackballing her all over Baltimore and a few other choice cities.

She squirmed around on her towel trying to root out a lump under her right shoulder and let out a loud sigh when she felt another shadow fall across her. That damn kid! She shot up fully ready to march him off and leave him with his absent parents, wherever that was. But when she looked up, instead of a four foot tall tow headed boy, a six foot tall dark haired man stood over her in blue board shorts with a matching towel slung over a very muscular shoulder. The sun wasn’t at its midday point yet and fell behind him shadowing his features, but she could plainly see that he was stacked to the nines. He sported chiseled biceps, his abs looked like a washboard, and every visible inch of his smooth skin was bronzed.

“Is this seat taken?” That voice. She couldn’t see him, but she would recognize that voice anywhere even though the years had deepened it to a low sexy pitch.

“What are you doing here?” she snapped.

“The same thing you are, Cait. Trying to relax. So do you mind if I join you?” He started to spread his towel.

“Yes, I mind. No, you may not. Possession is ninth tenths of the law. I’ve been on this piece of sand since dawn. Therefore, in this case, the law is on my side.” She plopped back down and crossed her arms over her ample breasts. “Now, go away, Bryce, my life is complicated enough as it is.”

“The law, huh? In case your mother hasn’t informed you, I’m a cop now. Your whole law thing doesn’t hold water with me. Have you forgotten our house sits just a few yards from yours? We co-own this stretch.” He continued to spread his towel and sink into the sand next to her.

“Fine, suit yourself. I’m sure it’s no coincidence that we’re here at the same time. Our mothers made sure of that didn’t they? I’ll try not to bother you.” She turned on her stomach and pointed her head in the opposite direction so she wouldn’t have to look at the fine example of a man Bryce Delaney had become. Her heart had done a familiar flip-flop at hearing him say her name and that really made her mad.

That was the problem with Bryce. He made her feel things she had no business feeling.

She loves to hear from her readers and can be contacted via her website, or her joint effort website.

Said Wendy from Happily Ever After Reviews about Bound By Trust:
Let me say, I loved the book and I fell in love with the characters. Their story is so realistic I felt as if they were my friends. Through all the hardships, Rafe is a man who Madi learned to depend on and love again. He made her feel like a woman cherished while teaching her what she craves is right in his arms. Theirs is a true love story with their share of disagreements and trials. The story had me from the first paragraph and is a must read if you want a real man falling in love with a real woman. 5 Teacups.
