Interview with Christie A.C. Gucker

Today, we meet Christie A.C. Gucker, author of The Cliff.

Can a childhood pact affect the lives of three adults?

Love and betrayal surrounds the lives of lifelong friends Lanie Rhodes, Grant Bennett, and Dane Voight. Years ago, they made a pact to remain together as friends forever. The boys also made another secret pact that same day—to never vie for Lanie’s love.

Grant and Lanie have secretly been pining for one another since they were children.

Now grown up, they finally admit their feelings for each other and what ensues is a twisted tale of deception as Dane does everything he can to stop them.
 
The story weaves around this uneven love triangle. What will happen to the pact? Will friendships be destroyed? Will lovers emerge?

How did you get into writing?

Every night when I would go to sleep this one story kept recurring. Each night it would get a little farther into the story. Eventually I started to write it all down and thus was born The Cliff. Once I wrote The Cliff other stories started to knock so I just started to write them all.

What's the earliest story you can remember writing?

Oh, I’ve been writing little stories since I was a child. I ever wrote a play in fourth grade, a musical! LOL

When did you decide to make the move to "published"?

Well, I had started writing on fanfiction and was getting such a good response. My husband told me I should just give it a try so I did. I was searching for something to leave behind for my daughters and grandchildren – a piece of me. This seemed to fit the bill for everything.

How did you find the experience of seeking a publisher?

I asked other authors and did research on the Internet.

What did it feel like when the acceptance notice came?

I think it was pretty surreal at first. You always have to worry about something you put out in the world for people to recognize. I was worried that a publisher might read my story and think it was terrible. So to get that type of acknowledgement was an amazing feeling. I think I’m still on cloud 9!

What inspired you to write the current release?

Honestly, and don’t laugh, but the love story between Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. There are also a lot of life real life experiences throughout the pages of the book.

What books have most influenced your life most?

The Twilight Saga was a huge one. I couldn’t put them down. I would absorb them in a day. And ANYTHING by Stephen King. He’s just an amazing storyteller. I’m an avid reader so there are just so many out there.

What book are you reading now?

I am working my way through Insurgent right now. Love the series. I am also reading Revealing Hamilton by Sarah Carr and Phantom by Laura Deluca.

What are your current projects?

I will begin the editing process for my next novel The Purple Heart, which comes out February 22, 2013. I am just finishing up on a short story that will be releasing soon Snapshot to Destiny. Both will release thought Pagan Writers Press. I am currently a new novel called Pacifically You and am working with marine biologist, shark expert and TV host Luke Tipple on this one. I am hoping for an August release once I send it out for submission.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

To never be afraid of taking a chance or a risk.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Don’t give up! Keep trying. You’ll get there.

How important is the support and friendship of other writers?

It is SO important. They understand everything that you go through and are amazing for bouncing ideas off of. I have to say I love the other authors I have met through this amazing experience.

How does your family feel about your writing career?

They have stood by me 100% of the time and are very proud of me. Too bad my two daughters can’t read my book – it’s for mature audiences and they are both way too young!

I like to take risks and am going to shark dive for research!

Christie A.C. Gucker lives in NJ with her husband, two daughters and a menagerie of pets. Being a mother is one of the greatest joys of her life. She has worked in the advertising industry for over 20 years as a degreed artist, but also works in the fine arts, especially sculpting out of stone or snapping photographs. Christie is also a singer and musician, and can be found singing on a few CDs.

After the death of her father, Christie searched for something to fill her desire to make a mark in this world. Her love of the arts and creativity allowed her to search for a new medium, which she found with a pen instead of a brush. Being an avid reader her whole life, and with her family cheering her on, she decided to take her shot, and began writing.

Fascinated by the supernatural and sharks, Christie studies both avidly. You’ll be sure to find something spooky lurking somewhere in her stories. Her greatest joy is sitting on a beach with her family while surf fishing, flying kites or building sandcastles with her girls.

Today, I welcome Carla Caruso, author of the new novel, Mommy Blogger.

What’s the earliest story you can remember writing?

I recall penning a kids’ series called The Mustard Gang as a youngster, inspired by Enid Blyton’s Adventurous Four (as opposed to the Famous Five). I had a character like her own Snubby, with a snub nose, too, and the crew of kids would get up to all sorts of (good-natured) mischief. I just Googled the name, the Mustard Gang, though, and it appears it’s since been used to refer to everything from a music band to a gang of criminals. And I thought I was being (semi) original!

What inspired you to write Mommy Blogger?

Mommy Blogger was inspired by my once applying to write for a parenting website, pretending I was a mom – when, in truth, I’m not! My clueless story ideas, needless to say, didn’t make the cut. The novel is also inspired by that strange time in your thirties, as women, when friends start falling into one of two camps – the yummy mommies and the party-loving singletons. Working out where you fit in the mix can be the dilemma.

What books have most influenced your life most?

Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta was a big one. It’s about a young Italian-Australian girl, trying to find her way as a teen, living within two cultures. I could totally relate being Italian-Australian myself! Also, Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic Series – I just fell in love with her books and, henceforth, felt okay to pursue my dream of writing humorous, girly reads!

What are your current projects?

Aside from Mommy Blogger, I’ve also just released an eBook with Penguin’s new Destiny Romance imprint dubbed Cityglitter. It’s about a gorgeous fairy living a glam life in the big city who does the one thing she promised herself she’d never do: fall in love with a human! I’ve also got a few other story ideas swirling around in my brain that I have to get cracking on.

Tell us a little something about yourself that we don’t know.

I’m terrified of big dogs! I blame getting chased by a Great Dane as a school kid and seeing my mum getting bitten by someone else’s dog during a walk, when I was young, for my fear. I’m a huge cat lover, though!

Cleo continues, “Most of our team work freelance from home or part-time in the office. You met Angelique in admin before. There’s also Bethany in accounts, who makes girly accessories for the site under her own label, and Topaz, who helps with packaging and postage. Oh, and Noah, of course, our webmaster—”
 
A deep male voice, behind me, cuts in. “My ears are burning.”
 
I swing around and my heart gets a jumpstart. The guy in question is not your garden-variety, weedy IT type. More like a young John Corbett, with mid-length, wavy, brown hair, sea-green eyes and a tall, well-built figure, clad in a fitted, charcoal tee and faded jeans.
 
Noah extends a hand toward me. I feel the warmth of his hand enclosing mine, before I remember mine’s Oompa Loompa colored. He smells of manliness and soap. Mommy blogging suddenly got a whole lot more interesting.
 
“Hey,” he drawls.
 
“Hi, I’m...Stella.” Yup, just forgot my name.
 
Noah’s gaze lingers on mine. “Your our new girl then?”
 
“Apparently.”
 
He nods slowly, as though sizing me up. “You’ll fit right in.”
 
“Oh, thanks,” I manage, but my mind screams: What’s that mean? That he could see me donning maternity jeans or possibly that I look like a MILF? Or worse, a GILF? (A Grandmother I’d Like To...)
 
“Look forward to seeing you at the next meeting,” Noah says, dropping my hand. Darn.
 
“Meeting?” I ask mildly as Noah strides away.
 
There were meetings? I had imagined being a faceless blogger, squirreling away in tracky-dacks in my home office, laughing to myself, while re-runs of Sex and the City played in the background.

I took the first book off the stack and examined the cover. It was titled Vampires throughout History. The cover was leather and so old it was stiff and cracked in spots. The pages showed signs of age too, yellowing and stiff to the touch. There was no table of contents, so it looked like I was going to have to scan the entire book for what I was wanting. I flipped the pages carefully, so as not to tear any of them.

After an hour of scanning and about half way through the book, I found something referring to vampire children.

Although extremely rare, the natural-born offspring of vampires exist throughout the world. These rare beings are called the dhampir. Dhampir are usually the product of a vampire and mortal. The most common of these unions is a male vampire impregnating a mortal woman. Vampires, both male and female, are seductive in nature and some mortals came willingly to these unions. However, the majority of dhampir born were produced through an act of rape.

Solitary by nature, it is uncommon for a vampire to settle with any one mate for long. The children of vampires, the dhampir, more often than not exhibit all the characteristics of their vampire parent. The strength, speed and agility are the usual hereditary traits that the children develop. They are not always born with these traits but develop them as they grow into adulthood.

The dhampir are day walkers. Some of these children are sensitive to the sunlight but will not perish in the direct rays. Most have no sensitivity at all. Drinking the fresh blood of mortals is also not usually required of the dhampir; however, some have a liking for it. Very few actually need it to survive.

Most dhampir are rejected by the vampire species because of their mortality and weaknesses. Mortals often reject the dhampir, as well, due to their vampirism, so they frequently remain outcast.

Dhampir are known for becoming vampire killers. Their closeness to the vampires and their vampire characteristics make them powerful vampire hunters. The unique ability to track and kill vampires is specific to only the dhampir and the mythological race of vampire hunters.

Historically, dhampir became vampire hunters as a trade. Towns and villages became plagued by vampires who were terrorizing their homes and killing their people. The dhampir accepted contracts in exchange for monetary payment and used their likeness to their vampire counterparts to exterminate the vampires.

Holy crap, that was a lot to process. The more I read the passages, the more I understood that my being a hunter was more than my heritage; it was my history and my future. Everything about my bloodlines had hunters involved.

Today, we meet author LaVerne Thompson, who's currently promoting her book, Sea Bride, from Decadent Publishing!

Hi, LaVerne! How did you get into writing?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid. I’d have these stories in my head about my day, a butterfly lol anything. Later after I learned to read if there was something about the story I didn’t like why then I’d just change the story in my head.

What's the earliest story you can remember writing?

The one I remember in the most detail was one I wrote when I was about 12. It was about this woman whose car got a flat tire and it was of course a dark and stormy night. She got out of the car to try to change the tire. Of course this was the age before cell phones. Anyway she opened up the trunk, found the spare tie and a tire iron and stood there staring at them. She had no clue what to do. Then suddenly a bright light appeared behind her. She turned around but of course at first she couldn’t see anything. Then lightning flashed and she saw a tall man get out of a car walking toward her. She grabbed the tire iron. But when he was standing in front of her she saw he was wearing a uniform of some sort. Turns out the car was a taxi and he was a taxi driver. Lol. In my senior year of highschool I was the only girl who took an auto mechanics class. Lol I learned to change a tire. Just in case.

When did you decide to make the move to "published"?

About ten years ago. I wrote a full-length novel about 100,000 words.

How did you find the experience of seeking a publisher?

Enlightening. I learned that I had no clue what I was doing. So I began to educate myself.

What did it feel like when the acceptance notice came?

Like floating on air.

What inspired you to write Sea Bride?

I’ve had this idea of a non-traditional mermaid/merman story on the back burner for awhile now. Where what we know or think we know about those who live under the sea was not quite accurate.

What books have most influenced your writing?

I need more pages but I’ll name just a few not in any particular order. Dragons of Pern and Sunrunner Series, fed my love of dragons, Wheel of Time series, for the complexity of a story, Honor’s Splendour, for what an alpha warrior should be, Strange Brew, for a love story between two different people, Dune for the intrigue and the beauty in storytelling, Pride and Prejudice, love can be soft, A Place To Call Home, for heart, Lord of the Rings, for adventure.

What are you reading now?

What are your current projects?

I’m getting ready to self-publish a fantasy series, Dragon’s Heart- Story of the Brethren should be out Sept. 1, I might have something out in Manga form next year, I’m almost finished one dark urban fantasy, I’m also working on another romantic suspense under my pen name Ursula Sinclair. And I’m a partner in a video production company, Epic 3 Productions, with two very talented friends. I also write a storyline for RP World Group, a free read storytelling site.

Did you learn anything from writing Sea Bride, and what was it?

Just confirmed for me that I love creating new worlds and blending genres.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Keep writing. Then write some more. Join a critique group. Try a few. Expect your first work to be rejected at least once. Then afterward keep writing. Submit it some place else.

How important is the support and friendship of other writers?

It is invaluable. I have a small circle of writer friends that have helped me along the way and new ones that continue to encourage and support me. We encourage and support each other. We all share the good the bad and the ugly in the business and our lives.

How does your family feel about your writing career?

Depends on who needs what at the time.

I have rose tattoo my husband dared me to get.

Lorraine Ryan wants to fly airplanes so she heads for the local airstrip in 1925 to make her dream come true.  Most of the flyboys think she’s cute but a woman’s place is in the home, not the cockpit.   When Guy Richter steps up and offers to teach her to fly, she’s captivated with both Guy and flight.  He nicknames her “Angel” and takes her up into that wild blue yonder.  Before long, they’re deep in love.


Love, however, isn’t always enough……


Guy, a former World War I flying ace, is haunted by his past. His demons include his war service, the death of his only brother in an accident the previous year, and the Valkyries that he evaded in France who trail him in the hopes that they can complete his destiny.  But his dreams lie with Angel and as they grow closer and closer, he soon realizes that if anyone can save him, it’s his Angel.

Excerpt:

When she got in sight of the airfield, she slowed her fast pace to a casual walk, plastered a lit Camel to her lip, and sauntered toward the hanger, eager and with more anticipation than she ever remembered having at Christmas.

Just outside the single hanger, her old shyness reared up and tried to choke her but she pushed it away, swaggering in the boots to show a confidence she didn’t feel now. When she walked inside, just three fellas were there, the older one who first spoke to her, Guy, and another man.

“Good morning,” she called out, hoping her voice didn’t betray her nerves.  Maybe Guy didn’t remember, she thought, maybe he changed his mind.

“Hi, Angel,” he said, relieving her worries. “Come meet the rest of the gang, the ones here, anyhow.  In case you forgot, I’m Guy, Guy Richter. This here is Pete but we all call him “Pop” because he’s the old man around here and this other goof is Charlie.”

“Pleased to meet you,” Charlie said, standing up to greet her.  “I like the duds, Angel.”

“Thanks, it’s nice to meet you too.”

In short order he introduced to some of the others, a kid too young to have been an ace in the war named Teddy, a fellow named Stan, who Guy called ‘Joe College’, and another man who ducked his head he said was Art. When Art turned on his heel, she noticed he was missing an eye and figured he might have lost it in the Army Air Corps. Two or three other young men hung around, kicking the dirt with their toes and staring at her as an awkward silence descended.

“She can’t fly like that,” the old man they called Pop growled. “She’d need goggles, a jacket, gloves, a leather helmet and she ain’t got any.  Better go home, kiddo.”

She shook her head.  “I ain’t going to scram.  I’m here to fly.”

“Leave off her, old man,” Guy said but he didn’t sound angry despite the harsh words. “She’s all right.  She looks to be close enough to Jimmie’s size she can wear his gear.”

“And I suppose you just happen to have all of it with you?” Pop growled.

“Yeah, I do,” Guy said.  “I brought it with me just for her.”

“And you’ll let the dame wear your own dead brother’s stuff? Jesus Christ on a crutch!”

Angel – because here she sure didn’t want to be just Lorraine – looked from one man to the other, more than a little upset they appeared to argue about her.

“Mind your beeswax, Pop,” Guy said, sounding irate for the first time. “C’mon, Angel, let’s get you ready to fly.”

He beckoned her to follow so she trailed behind him out to a flivver where he lit a smoke before he dug out the flying gear.

“Did I do something wrong?” she asked. “I didn’t mean to make anybody sore.”

Guy blew out smoke and shook his head.  “It ain’t you, honey, it’s just Pop. He's like a bear sometime, that’s all. Don’t get your knickers in a knot over what he said.”

“Okay, I won’t.  Thanks, Guy.”

“Aw, don’t mention it,” he said as he reached into the car.  “Here, try the jacket and see if it’s close enough to fit.”

The brown leather aviator jacket dwarfed her, much too large but she tugged it into place.

“What do you think?” she asked, pirouetting for him.

“It looks swell,” Guy said. “It’s big but you look better in it than Jimmie ever did.”

She looked down at the jacket. “Did it really belong to your brother?”

“Yeah, it did Angel.”

“What happened to him? Did he die in the war?”

Guy’s face darkened but he shook his head.  “No, we both made through the war but he bought it down at Kansas City, at the motorcycle board track not long before it closed last year.”

Angel remembered reading about a terrible accident, one in which the motorcyclist lost control of his speeding bike and veered off the track into the crowd. He died on impact and so did three of the viewers.  “I’m sorry.”

Guy shrugged his shoulders. “Don’t sweat it.  He’d like a pretty girl to wear his gear. Here, get the helmet on and the goggles so we can fly.”

His casual compliment pleased her but she didn’t say anything about it. She managed to pull the tight fitting leather over her head and put the goggles in place.  Now she felt like a giant insect and as she followed him out to the waiting plane, she figured she must look like one too.  She had one more question, though, and she turned to Guy, lips parted to ask it.

“So you were in the war too?”

He hesitated but just for a moment before he nodded.  “Yeah, I was but it was a long time ago and a long way off.  Come on, Angel baby, if you want to fly, let’s fly.”

Character Interview: Gawain – of the Vampires

Today, Elise Wyles gives us a chat with her character, Gawain of the Vampires.

What’s your favorite food(s)? (Isn’t limited to humans – if you write paranormal can be anything you want it to be.)

Food? Why I don’t imbibe food of the earth. Frankly its revolting, tasteless, and as appealing going in as out. Now a nice, warm, cup of the sweetest blood? Oh yes, that’s simply divine. Of course, the sweetest is from the veins of my chosen one.

Who was your first boyfriend/girlfriend and how old were you when you met?

My first was Bede of the Woods. I was eight hundred and twenty one years old.

How long have you worked at your current job?

Since I was one hundred and sixty five years old. It was my calling, my life until I met Bede who has become my life.

What’s your greatest pet peeve with your Mother/Father? Why?

Pet peeve with my parents? What in the Stylox…oh yes, I see it’s a human custom isn’t it? Well, there were no issues with my parents growing up. Mother and father have both been kind to me. They took pride in all I did and still do.

If you could meet anyone living or dead who would it be and why?

Bede’s father – I’ve the desire to rip out his throat with my claws and stomp on his beating heart for the treachery and brutality to Bede and her young sister.

Who’s your favorite artist, singer, etc.?

I do so love the songs of Selene – lullabies sung to the young for generations. They’re calming, soothing and fill one with the hope of life.

Name two things about Bede you’d change and tell us why?

Two things…hmmm. Well, firstly I’d change her desire to constantly nag. I swear the woman hasn’t stopped nagging me about going back to Amuliana’s realm since she discovered my minor falsehood weeks past. I always keep my word and having her worrying and fussing is frustrating.

Her pesky habit of helping those who are undeserving of her kindness. She has been talking to the Queens, seems she’s feeling the urge to nest and since she has not grown into her immortality enough to reproduce an offspring of our own – she’s taken in every child with a wing, a fang, a claw…all while using her wiles to keep me distracted.
