Living with small children is like a Federation diplomatic mission. They look odd, dress in bizarre ways, and their favourite foods are completely incomprehensible. Their modes of communication are even less transparent.

For example:

Tot: Diego. And the Baby Shower.
Me: Baby shower?
Tot: Diego's baby shower. His noise, "Rowl Rowl."
Me: Oh, Diego and the Baby Jaguar?
Tot: Yes.
Me: Then...?
Tot: Diego. And the Baby Jaguar. With the Macaw.
Me: (silence)
Tot: Alicia and the kinkajou.
Me: Okay, I'll play. Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra!
Tot: (silence)
Me: Temba, his arms wide?
*mutual stares of confusion*

And to think it's only going to get worse in the teen years. Shaka. Shaka, when the walls fell, indeed.

Yet, for the good of the future, one must keep trying.
