An Interview with Author PK Morris
Today, we hear a little about my Rebel Ink colleague, PK Morris, author of A Single Man’s Valentine.
Hi, PK! Thanks for being here.
What's the earliest story you can remember writing?
I don’t remember the name of the story, but I wrote it when I was six or seven. It was about the doe and her twin fawns that lived in my grandmother’s backyard. I even made illustrations for it. My mom took it to the printing company she worked at and had it “published” for me. Really, she just made photo copies. But I thought it was so cool!
When did you decide to make the move to "published"?
Hmm, this is a tricky question. I’ve thought about it for years but was never truly serious about it until the last couple of years when I saw a friend of mine get her story published in the eBook market. She was like the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak. I had wanted it, and seeing her achieve it gave me some courage.
How did you find the experience of seeking a publisher?
I’ve probably had the best experience possible as my friend suggested a few publishers to check out. Once I had something I wanted to send in, I told her about it and she offered to give her editor a head’s up. I thought I was going to have weeks of anxiety waiting for an answer, but it was only about twenty-four hours. I was pretty lucky.
What did it feel like when the acceptance notice came?
When the acceptance notice came I was just about sick with anxiety. I was so scared to open the email, afraid that I was going to be rejected. But then I took a deep breath and read it. I was so excited to see that the publisher had loved my story and wanted to publish it! I couldn’t believe it, yet, at the same time I couldn’t stop thinking, I knew I could do it!
What inspired you to write A Single Man’s Valentine?
Well, I signed up for a challenge on a writing community. It was a Valentine’s Day fic fest. I basically got to anonymously write someone a short story as a Valentine’s Day gift and the recipient got to give me a few ideas or prompts. I took one of the prompts (first Valentine’s Day after a divorce) and ran with it! In the end it was well liked. For publishing purposes, I rewrote it like crazy! Looking back on the original version… it wasn’t that good. I grew a lot as a writer in the two years since I had written it and I’m so proud of what the story has become.
