Today's Six Sentence Sunday snippet comes from Strings Attached, my contemporary romance set in Canada's north.
The wild dog was small and scared, and he might run if she told him to get. But she knew that the blood on his snout and the hunger she saw in his eyes made him dangerous and unpredictable. In response to her voice, he looked uncertain and bared his teeth with a warning growl. Please, Josie prayed to the air and trees, please let Connie come along soon and scare him off. The coyote took a step forward and Josie took a step back, still foolishly holding the meat, the blood staining her hands and the cuff of her sleeve now. This novel has its own companion website, where you can find more info.
Her last thought before the animal leaped at her was that at least she wouldn’t have to call Animal Control on Grover.

Great suspense. Her conflicting thoughts are well done.
Thank you! I am happy you read and I really appreciate the comment!
The set up is that she's a rancher who has a habit of bringing in strays. Chickens start disappearing, and she is upset that it's likely the stray dog that's been hanging around, who she's named Grover, and she figures she'll have to take him taken away. Turns out, it's not him.
A little bit of my farm upbringing showing through here!
Sensational six, I loved the suspense.
Lovely tension and suspense! :)

Just pre-scheduled the six for next week...
Oh wow. It makes you wonder why she's holding the meat and won't let it go.
Yes, indeed, Cassandra - She freezes up, and curses herself roundly for such a rookie error!
Nice 6

Very tense!Curious to know what happens next.
Wow; great tension. I was a bit confused-was it a wild dog or a coyote? I want to know what happens.
Hi Karysa - It was a coyote. Just there's only so many times you can use that same word repeatedly within a few lines.
Thanks for the comments, all!
Very intense scene! I love it!
Oh, great six! Makes me want to know more.
